The satisfaction you receive is only temporary, leaving a slight after-taste of regret on your tongue. To be fair, you don’t necessarily have to blame yourself for CRAVING junk food. “The biggest hits — be they Coca-Cola or Doritos — owe their success to complex formulas that pique the taste buds enough to be alluring but don’t have a distinct, overriding single flavor that tells the brain to stop eating.” However, you do have to blame yourself for going back and caving in. Here are few tips to help you kick this nasty ex-girlfriend to the curb and rid you junk food habits for once and all.

1) Add a Healthy Variety 

Keeping a healthy balance of different foods in your diet is essential to your success. However, it can be tricky. Add too much variety and it will be hard to stay on track. Keep too little variety and your food cravings will come rushing. Try sticking to healthy, nutritious foods full of fiber that will keep you feeling full for hours and make sure to switch it up on a weekly or monthly basis. Overall, keep a balance of lean proteins and healthy fats like almonds or avocados, and complex carbs.

2) Find Healthy Ways to De-Stress 

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco conducted a study in which a test group of rats were put in a high-stress situation. They found that the rats under stress tended to engage in pleasure seeking behaviors, including eating high-energy foods (foods full of fat & sugar). So is it normal for our bodies to crave junk under high stress situations? Yes.  Do we have to listen to these cravings? Absolutely not. Next time you find yourself stress eating, try engaging in de-stressing activities whether it’s workout out, taking a hot bubble bath, inhaling & exhaling slowly, or reading your favorite book.

3) Revamp Your Kitchen

Out with the old and in with the new! If you stock your house with healthy & junk-free food, you will be much more likely to stick to your clean eating habits. Don’t be afraid to get rid of 3-month old bag of Doritos. In all seriousness, stock your pantry for success and you’ll be surprised by how much less junk food you eat.

4) Snack Smart

Letting yourself get too hungry can be a recipe for disaster. Snacking healthy between meals can definitely help decrease cravings and lower your risk for making bad choices. Stock up with fresh fruit or savory snacks like lightly salted almonds or whole grain crackers.

5) Drink Up

No, we do not mean go to your nearest bar for a pitcher of beer. Staying hydrated all day can keep you feeling fuller, less tired and help keep cravings at bay. Need something with a little more flavor? Try adding lemon to your water or discover your new favorite tea.
