man-staring-at-computer1-460x306The last 10 years have seen a dramatic shift in how people go about getting a job. The days of surfing Monster or Careerbuilder to find openings and to post your resume are gone (well, not gone, but significantly diminished) and have been replaced with much more strategic and targeted searches (on both the employer and the employee side). To successfully find that new career, keep in mind a few major shifts in the process:

Your online profile is the new resume

As we continue to gravitate towards a much more “online” world, that offers employers and recruiters a chance to learn even more about you before even speaking with you. Your resume now is the tip of the iceberg. Recruiters now through various search tools are often able to pull up your entire online “brand”. LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, meetup groups, all these things can typically be found and provide more insight into if you’re the right candidate for the role. A resume is still essential, but make sure that you’re projecting what you’re looking for on these other mediums.

Who you know is the new what you know

It used to be that relevant education and experience were the only items needed to land a good job. Obviously these are still incredibly important traits, but as the job market continues to become flooded with qualified and eager applicants, all with elite educations and significant experience, your connections become even more important in getting you in play for a job. Companies are increasingly hosting open houses, workshops and career fairs as a way to promote themselves and meet potential candidates. Attending these and meeting with recruiters and employees gives you a chance to network and let them put a face to that name on the resume.

Really learning about the company is the new learning about the company

Almost every interview will contain the question “what do you know about our company?” For a long time, a quick summary about the company would suffice. Employers have caught on though, and a simple google or wikipedia search in the lobby before your interview won’t cut it anymore. Take the time to research not only what the company does, but what is currently happening with them? Did they just acquire a company? Was a new product just released? Show that you have interest in the day to day instead of just getting the abbreviated view of what a company does.
